Learning a New Skill
Have you ever wanted to learn something new? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to know how to play a certain game, or gain proficiency at a craft like knitting or crochet? Lately, we have been playing the role of student and learning some new things and wanted to share some of our resources with you.
Calligraphy
I’ve always admired the art of decorative lettering and calligraphy, so I recently signed up for an online course to learn how to do it. The website Modern Calligraphy 101 allows you to sign up for a fee and teach yourself this lost art!
Games
Leslie is becoming proficient in the ancient game of Mahjong, thanks to a weekly game with friends and her teacher, Johni Levene. Bridge is another game that has a bit of learning curve but the right teacher will have you playing in no time!
Knitting & needlepoint
Is knitting more your thing? Jennifer Knits is a knitting and yarn supply shop in Brentwood that offers classes and wonderful yarns to get you started. Purl Soho in NYC is also a great resource that offers tutorials and kits to teach you how to make simple scarves and hats. If this is of interest, we suggest checking out Aristeia Needlepoint for all of you needlepoint needs.
PaintinG & drawing
If art is more your inclination, Brentwood Art Center is a great place to take on new media or improve your artistic abilities. They offer classes and workshops to aspiring and experienced artists alike, ranging from watercolor and drawing to collage, and ceramics. They also and hold an annual art show, exhibiting the work of BAC faculty and students who wish to participate.
